Tailgating on a Budget

It's football season and tailgating with our family and friends is something we all look forward too in the Fall. With food cost up 13% over last year and continuing to skyrocket, everyone is looking for ways to celebrate on a budget. The cost of chicken wings are down but hot dogs are slightly above average over last year.

You don't want to give up tailgating before your favorite game . It's all about the experience.  The cost of game tickets and gas to get to the game is costly too. How can we save?

One of the easiest way to save is make a list at the beginning of the season and rotate who will bring which item each week. You don't want to be the one bringing the most expensive meat or alcohol every week. Rotate and remember to keep the foods very simple. Make a stack of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or roll ups. Bring a plate of ham roll ups stuffed with a pickle spear. Stock up on chicken wings when they're on sale and keep in the freezer to use during the season. Make a crockpot of chili at home to bring to serve alone or top your hot dogs with. I love serving walking tacos for an outdoor event.  Head to your favorite warehouse store and buy a multipack of corn chips like Frito's. Spoon chili into the open bag of Frito's, add sour cream and shredded cheese and eat and enjoy with a spoon.  Heaven in a bag and it's inexpensive, easy, fun and no clean up. Score!

Bloody Mary make your own is popular is always popular on game day. Set up a table and ask everyone to split the cost of the alcohol , ice, celery, pickles, olives or whatever your favorite toppings are.

Lastly, don't forget the desserts. Bake brownies or cookie bars you can dress up with chopped candy or chocolate chips that won't cost a lot to make and everyone enjoys. Bake a giant cookie in a pizza pan  and decorate it in the colors of your favorite team.

Happy Weekend!
