Labor Day

There are Four Seasons people and then there are Summer people. My family (you know who I mean) are without a doubt "we need sunshine" people.  So when Labor Day rolls around, faces turn to frowns long before the first leaves have fallen off the trees.   Labor Day is a popular weekend for cookouts and outdoor parties.
So let that Summer feeling linger and enjoy with these simple tips.

No matter how clever you try to be with your menu planning, everyone likes the standards.
Grilled burgers, grilled chicken, hot dogs, bratwursts, and of course, steaks.
Mixed fruit salad, tomato, mozzarella and basil skewers (pictures below), potato salad and/or cole slaw, and brownies, cookies, or set up a "make your own ice cream sundae" station.  This is a favorite at our house.
Serve chilled beer, wine, and  I always like to try a signature" cocktail.  Make up pitchers of Ginger Shandies" (recipe and picture below) for refreshing drinks.  This recipe makes 6 servings.
You need: 3 bottles chilled Hoegaarden beer, 1 bottle chilled ginger beer, thinly sliced lemon, mint sprigs.
In a large pitcher, combine the chilled beers.  Stir in most of the lemon slices and mint sprigs.  Fill 6 rocks glasses with ice.  Add remaining lemon slices to the glasses and pour in the Ginger Shandy.  Garnish each glass with a mint sprig and serve.  It tastes refreshing and looks appealing in the pitcher.

Decor for outdoor parties is so much fun.  Red, white and blue, of course, for Labor Day and you can pick up some great bargains on these items.  Stock up now on the red, white and blue.  Save it for next Fourth of July!  Create lighting with paper lanterns or tiki torchlights.
Lastly, plan fun activities for all ages.  Make s'mores, play volleyball, bocce ball, tag football or bring out the Slip n' Slide for great fun!  (You'll want to tell guests to bring swim suits for this one).
After a day of fun, smiles will return!  I promise!

~Happy Labor Day and have a safe weekend~

*Watch for the return of Soup & Slow Cooker Tuesday soon
